Yoga move to relieve nagging lower back pain..

How are you? Can you believe it is October already? What happened to September? It absolutely flew by…I hope you are all settled back in and feeling good…

It already seems such a long time ago now but we had a wonderful late summer holiday in Umbria in Italy - Myself, my husband and daughter. We cycled 100km over 3 days through stunning countryside. I was blown away by Assisi and the medieval towns passed through and was in awe of the magic of nature and the incredible history in all it’s splendour. Incredible.

I was able to be really present, something which is easier said than done and could appreciate the everyday miracles are all around us. Im doing it now, back in Barcelona tapping on these keys and watching the falling words into my brain appear on the page.. in the now…Oooo that was nice.

I was also in awe of my my daughter, who is only 8 years old and cycled the whole way taking the challenge in her stride. I was so proud of her. It was a really beautiful and bonding time for us all and I am filled with gratitude..

but boy I could feel that cycle ride in my back.. Yikkes!

A Pilates and yoga teacher with a bad back? Oh yes, people… It was super stiff I can tell you!

Most of us suffer from lower back pain at sometime in our lives and for some of us feel a constant niggle or tightness in this area. Lifestyle is often to blame for this kind of pain, constant sitting in chairs and on sofas, lack of exercise, bad mattresses.. Our backs take the brunt.

We also hold fear, insecurity, anxiety about who we are, lack of trust all down here in this energy centre which can play havoc on our back and on our eliminiation systems that give us toilet trouble and age our skin.

Having a healthy lower back can make life much more enjoyable. We can get on and do our things with grace and ease…Imagine being pain free with a spring in your step and being able to move without all that stiffness? Yes please!

Hello, hello. I hope all is well.

I wanted to talk to you today about the holy grail of modern life, the ever elusive "life balance".  Search no further people, the truth is..

... "There is no such thing as work life balance. It's all life. The balance has to be within you"  - Sadhguru

My clients often come to me burnt out, overwhelmed and trying to spin so many plates. Life is busy. There are no two ways about it but there is STILL something out there that seems to make us think that we should be doing it ALL, and doing it all PERFECTLY.

It's not possible, although some people make it look like it is, and we start to come down with a serious case of comparisonitis.

This can make us feel inadequate when we are far from it. This fear of inadequacy and being "found out" fuels us to keep going, planning, time mangaging.. to fit something else in, to forget about that thing we were going to do for ourselves (not important, right? )... and get it ALL done.  Eventually we just collapse in a heap of self doubt and exhaustion.

Enough, I say!

Overwhelm and stress caused by modern pressures is a biggie.  My clients come to me frazzled. They are running at 100 miles an hour to keep on top of it, missing the present moment too often and life is passing so fast. Although they know it's damaging their health and relationships, they don't know where to start

The idea of getting strong, healthy and balanced, physically and emotionally, is not so you can DO more, powering through life like a supersonic robot getting it all done perfectly, but to get strong and balanced so you can do what you have to do with resilience, humour, and joy. Then also discern whats important and necessary, and get on with those things and have the confidence and courage to let other stuff go. 

When you take time to cultivate a strong, balanced body, meditative mind and a health nervous system, you are connected back into your life. 

Pilates and Kundalini Yoga can help with this internal balance. You can be more present and get on with your busy life with verve and vitality.

Overwhelm and anxiety will always come up as a part of life but letting go of the need to do it all and be perfect, knowing that you are safe and your world and doing just fine helps. Staying in Overwhelm and anxiety is where the damage happens. Let stuff go, practically and emotionally. You have more freedom, which according to Thich Nhat Hanh is they only condition for happiness. 

“Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If, in our heart, we still cling to anything - anger, anxiety, or possessions - we cannot be free.” 

I believe that looking after our bodies and our minds this way has never more essential. We are younger longer, our bodies have to last a long time and we are living a demanding lifestyle - That isn't going to change, and we are still going to have to do loads of things that we are obligated to do. Life is still going to be busy and thats okay.  It doesnt have to be ovewhelming though.  We can ride the stormy waves and enjoy the adventure.

5 Benefits of practising Yoga Outdoors..

Thank you so much for staying on board after the GDPR craziness, and if you are new, Hello and Welcome!

It's been a crazy busy few weeks but, when I think about it, they always are these days, and I have to be really conscious not to get overwhelmed.

Is it just me? Can you relate to that feeling that time is flying and you are meeting yourself coming back?

Stop and breathe..  Just little moments, but conscious moments help.

Get outside if you can.. Take a moment to get present and feel the grass beneath my feet feels so good.
 
I went for a walk the other morning, with my husband and my daughter, to our local park, over looking the city. Although, we intended to practice Yoga, I didn't intend to film it, hence the camera is propped up against a shoe and you get to watch us all, mainly my husband, a bit distorted.. Keeping it real people! You can follow it and might even make more sense upside down.

It's not about getting the postures or the transitions perfect, its about giving it a whirl, on a personal level and enjoying the process.

As you can see my husband is not an advanced practitioner, but he gives it his best and feels amazing from doing so. Even a small amount has greatly improved his balance, flexibilty, stamina and... stress levels.  

Never a competition - Accept yourself and enjoy.

So why practice yoga outdoors?

1. It gets you in touch with nature and the enviornment, which is ultimately part of you. The sun on your face, the breeze on your skin, the fresh air and grass smells are a symphony for the senses and deepen your experience. Its good for the spirit and gets you into your body. This harmony induces wellbeing.

2. This deeper connection can reduce the stress hormones adreneline and cortisol and relieve anxiety and overwhelm, more so than when practiced in a large group studio class. Science!

3. Balance and stability are challenged by uneven terrain and the internal experience is different. Muscles work harder to stabilise and make necesary micro adjustments. 

4. Concentration is also challenged, by unforseen sounds and activity - a cold, dark cloud passes. people might be walking by, and you have to call on some inner resources that you wouldn't need in the studio. Riding the waves of sensations helps you bring yourself to a clam state.

5. Sense of freedom. You are alive. You are a child of the universe and belong, just as you are. Perfectly imperfect and that it's just perfect. Breathe and Love it! 

As well as connecting you to you, practising with others anywhere is fun and bonding too. It connects you and therefore being outdoors together, and aligning with nature is a beautiful little cherry on the cake.

Can Pilates tone and lift my bum and is it even important?

I want to talk to you about your bum!

My tagline "Lift your Bum, Lift your Vibration, Rock your World" is my way of  letting you know my work involves the physical self and the spiritual self and the vibe is playful. 

It's a bit tongue in cheek (no pun intended..haha) and works.

Most of us, given the choice, would like a toned bum and to look good in our jeans, however, a bum that could crack walnuts might be superfluous to requirements and, lets be fair, who the heck has time?.....These are fair points. 

In fact, with all we have to do, a walnut cracking bum is just not on the To-Do list... but for the sake of your back do give a little bit of bum strength some thought. 

In reality, with the pace of life as it is we absolutely need to have strength and flexibility in our bodies, but we also need connect to our inner power, universal energy too. We want to get clarity and peace internally, since our external worlds are so highly pressured and often overwhleming. Sometimes getting the balance with what our body needs and what our heart needs to thrive is tricky. Which is more important? Doesn't something have to give?

Is the strength of my bum that important? You may ask

Yes, a strong bum is important to your physical wellbeing as it supports the spine and keeps the pelvis stable.  You don't have to go mad but some strength and tone really can help.

Pilates helps you tone and strengthen your bum, which actually helps relieve lower back pain and support the whole spine, along with the help of abdominals. Having a shapely bum might be nice, but having a strong bum makes you feel good, in balance and moves your body more efficiently, and this what is important.

A supported spine keeps you young and, since we are younger longer,  you need to keep your body up for the task in hand...

..A full juicy life.

You can move with ease and grace when your hip area is balanced and muscles are doing the right thing at the right time. The whole body is supported and you can do your things in flow, pain free and feeling fantastic.

Looking good in jeans is great, but being strong and feeling good in jeans even better.

Its win win.

So go on, take the stairs next time, your back will thank you for it.

The 20 minute video below is not bum specific, but as part of a rounded set it's great to get you strong, energised and invigorated, and connected in your heart, your core and your body..

When envy is not the root of all evil

I want to talk about an unusul, strong emotion gave me a light bulb moment.

Envy..

Now, I am not up for envy or coverting the achievements and success of others. Although I lack a bit of self confidence, I feel blessed to be who I am and lead the life I lead. I love my adventure and the people in it, and I rarely feel I want what other people have. Envy and I are not well aquainted, thankfully. 

So when one day last week I felt a surge of envy that brought me to my knees, I was really surprised and totally out of my comfort zone. 

As a proud Ambassador of the Women of Contribulation movement I am about support, celebration, inspiration and being delighted by the lives and work of others, especially women, so I felt ashamed and really confused.

What could this mean?

I had been watching a webinar replay of a woman I admire, and became so emotional as she talked. Not only has she found her purpose, but was so in tune with it that when she spoke about it her energy could raise the roof, she had developed her own fantastic method and was serving loads of people with her work and making a good living doing so.  

"I want some of that!" "When will it happen for me", I cried like a baby.

Of course, I was absolutely so happy for her and still felt celebration, admiration and proud of a woman in her power, showing up in the world. I was happy she was living her bliss.

Absolutely Yes! This is not the point.

But I was in self judgement and comparision and it did not feel good.  I felt that I was failing. I felt that I was not on purpose, not succeeding and I wanted to be as sure as she was. I wanted to raise the roof when I talked about my work and I hadn't been recently. 

So, Envy, Thank you for the wake up call.

The strong emotion was a message that I was out of alignment. That I was pushing too hard against the grain, and not allowing. I wasn't being patient. I was in fear. Fear of success, fear of failure, fear or critcism, fear of not being good enough. I felt like I wasnt going to find my way.

"Envy comes from people's ignorance of, or lack of belief in, their own gifts"  Jean Vanier

I realised I had been teaching but not putting much time into my own practice, which I love and need, I realised I had been ignoring my intuition about a few things that weren't working and I was on my own path, it was unique and that's okay. I realised that everything is working out perfectly and the universe has my back if I let it.  I am good enough.

And since that moment of realisation and surrender I feel different, like something shifted. I feel more peaceful and faith is restored. My classes have gone well, including my children's classes which can sometimes be wild, and I have had lovely feedback from clients.

I changed some funky energy and I have Envy to thank.

There are no negative emotions only flags, signposts and alarms that give us messages. Staying in the emotion and dwelling, culviatiing stories and excuses is where the pain sets in..

Listen to the message, reflect and process.. Job done.. ..until the next time.

Hi Lovely,

I mean't to write last week but I had a nasty tummy bug, and then the school holidays and, well, everything got shelved for a while.

My body and my mind needed a bit of downtime and I took it... And now I feel great again. Yay!

I have so many things to tell you about - We had a blast the weekend before last at the official launch of our amazing book The Pay It Forward Series; Notes To My Younger Self. 

I felt like a film star. We all did.

Not only was it awesome to spend some quality time with my mum, cousin and friends and feel their love and support, but it was great, if not a bit overwhelming, to actually meet my co.authors

I had total imposter syndrome and feelings of inadequacy being thrown in with these formidible women and was a bag of nerves. I've been feeling a bit anxious generally lately.

I often get a bit of anxiety from time to time, and have been using my Kundalini Yoga tools to bring me back into my body (check out the 2 minute alternate nostril breathing technique here and below) but everybody was super lovely and I relaxed straight away and felt the compassion and comradarie.  The sisterhood vibe was super high!

It felt like I'd known them all for years. 

Not only were we sharing the pages of the same book, but we had been back to dark places and then brought them into light for everyone to see and black and white. We all knew how that felt. Vulnerable but powerful - and you could feel it. We also had loads of support and a good male presence which put the yang in our yin and it was dynamite.

The energy was so bright and vibrant that it felt like a rocket launch rather than a book launch.

So now its time to read the book and Pay It Forward.

"Oh Thank you", I said (to not the right person) and left it again, at another spot for another finder.  Maybe the new finder won't need it either...... but her sister/friend/mother/stranger might.

How sharing my bulimia secret was essential for my healing

Good morning Beautiful,

I have some super exciting news coming out next week about  the amazing The Pay It Forward Series: Notes To My Younger Self, I can barely wait to tell you about it!!

When I was asked to collaborate on the book, I was over the moon and thrilled to be involved an such an incredible project, right from the get go.

I thought by sharing my 20 year battle with Bulimia (yikkes- another vulnerable moment) with the world, I would help others, but I had no idea how chathartic it would be for myself.

At first, I approached my chapter from a place of having "healed" and thought I would be simply sharing my pearls of wisdom to the greater good of womenkind. You go girl!

"Easy. Been there. Write about it. Help Others. Job Done."

However, it was not as simple as this. On the contrary, it was far from being "Job Done" - it opened old wounds and new vulnerabilities.

As I dug deeper, and started paring back old layers from a new place, I had insights that I'd never had before. In opening the old wounds I got to heal them all over again, but from a stronger and healthier place adding a new dimension to my recovery. Awesome.

I was blown away profoundly by the experience of going back, from a fresh perspective, and I was excited to be able to use my experience to help others.

Already a great believer our strength lies in our vulnerability, I also realised that sharing the story was not only a good thing to do, but, if you are willing and able, an ESSENTIAL thing to do.

For the person sharing and the person receiving. 

Why?
Because once you know the power is inside you and you have an unwavering belief that, as long as you keep putting one foot in front the other, even when the storm is blowing in your face, you WILL succeed.... and if you have the summit of the mountain in your sights, even if you are not there yet......Something beautiful happens when you to reach your hand down and help another women up.

For both of you.

By sharing our stories we disarm the power they have over us, and give hope to others. 

Knowing you aren't "broken" and someone else has been there too, helps.  We are all in it together and doing our best.

I am not my story but without it I wouldn't be here today, with my amazing husband, family and friends, a colourful and full, happy life, making a living doing what I love, in Barcelona. 

Having revisited and reprocessed my story for the book, I am more connected to myself and my work and have more confidence and conviction in what I am doing and why. heartcorebody is thriving and seeing the benefits in my clients has been phenomenal..It's coming from the heart. It all makes sense now and it wouldn't be possible if I were me without my experience. The the magic is the journey. It's the same for us all.

I would not have changed a damn thing. 

We don't want to erase our stories, but we need to know how to weave them into our hearts and present lives, so we are empowered by them and not the victim of them.

I am grateful for all that I have and all that I am. Life truly is a terrific ride and I feel blessed.
